I was invited by Debra Ariola to visit the plant research center at the UCDavis. They have many labs and fields and they create new hybrids.
I had two opportunities to discover beekeeping. The first one was with Jamie Buffington. She has three beehives in her backyard. We observed the bees with a magnifying glass and she explained me about her bees behaviour. At the end we have tasted fresh honey. Delicious! The second opportunity was with Ann Evans. She also has three beehives. We opened one of them because it was less active and Ann saw ants at the bottom. We were surprised to discover an empty beehive! The queen and the rest of the bees were gone, probably because of an attack. The other beehives were okay. It was the first time I wore bees protections. Very interesting! This Saturday it was the Woodland tomato festival.
I helped Kristy from the Yolo County Office of Agriculture at the chefs competition stand. Four restaurants from Woodland were here to cook the best appetizer, entrée and desert with tomatoes. Five judges tasted their meals This Thusrday I went to the Walk About with Dorothy.
Every year during the summer the Farm to School and RISE program meet in every school in Davis to focus on the gardens and the recycling program in the shcools. They can see what is good and what need to be changed. I have visited the Davis food co-op with Doug Walter, who is the membership director.
The Co-op is a supermarket wich provides many local and fresh food and functions like a cooperative. Doug showed me the supermarket shelves and where they store the products. On Saturday it was the Peach Party at the Good Humus farm. Many people were here to celebrate the crops. A lot of delicious food to eat! Really fun.
