What is Slow Food ?Slow Food is not only a food movement. It is an italian non profit organization, now present all over the world. Slow Food aims to promote a more sustainable way to eat, by eating and seasonal products, and helps farmers in this way.
In the United States, every state have a lot of chapters, depending on each county. These chapters organize different programs and events in the counties. - I have to collect the data provided by River Delta School District for compiling information for procurement of products from farmers. River Delta is an added school district to the Yolo County Office of Agriculture. - Help at the Full Belly Farm camp. During the summer, the farm welcomes children to camp and have fun by learning about the work on a farm : harvesting and cheese making to stargazing and creek splashing. Dorothy Peterson is one of the Slow Food co chapter's chair, with Joyce Hardi. Dorothy is also my supervisor, thank's to her,I will work with a lot of people around Davis and discover many things. I hope to show how important partnerships are in promoting agriculture in Yolo County.
My work : - Make a series of 3 videos with 3 different farmers for the Student Nutrition Services in Davis. A lot of local and organic products are provided for the children at lunch in the Davis schools. I will promote this program by interviewing 3 farmers which sell products to the schools. - One time per week I will help Tabari (who works for the Davis Farm to School program) by maintaining and uptating the Facebook account. The two of us will be addeting the farms interviewes. Farm to School provides garden and farm visits for the children, supports farm fresh lunches and reduces waste at schools (click here to learn more about the Davis RISE program). Davis Farm to School is a program of Yolo Farm to Fork, a non profit 501(c)3. The market is a fun event which takes place 2 times per week at Central Park yearound. A third market is open at Sutter Hospital in Davis for 5 months. I will help the farmers with taste testing and selling their products. About the Davis Farmer's Market click here - Attend different Slow Food meetings and events. Yolo County is famous for his tomatoes. Capay Tomato Festival and Woodland Tomato Festival are two such events. - Volunteer at the UCD sustainable garden if I have the time, to harverst vegetables, fruits and plant flowers - Tour Student Nutrition Services and central kitchen facilities in Davis.
